Xenical (Orlistat) is a lipase inhibitor that reduces the absortion of dietary fat. It is used in conjunction with a mildly hypocaloric diet in individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 in the presence of other risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, or hypercholesterolaemia. Orlistat should be used in conjunction with other lifestyle measures to manage obesity. Treatment should only be continued beyond 12 months after discussing potential benefits and risks with the patient. On stopping Orlistat, there may be a gradual reversal of weight loss.

Dosage for Xenical (Orlistat)

The usual dose is 120mg taken immediately before, during or up to 1 hour after each main meal (up to a maximum of 360mg daily. Continue Xenical (Orlistat) beyond 12 weeks only if weight loss since the start of treatment exceeds 5%. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose of Xenical (Orlistat) should be omitted.
